CHAMPIONS AGAIN!
GLASGOW A PLANT TIGERS STORM TO THE 2011 PREMIER LEAGUE TITLE
It's been 17 long years, but all the hard work and dedication over the closed season to totally rebuild the Ashfield track and put together a team full of potential has finally paid off for Glasgow, as they secured the Premier League title with 2 crushing home wins in the same afternoon at Ashfield Stadium.
This is the Tigers' third British Premier League Championship Title and is the first since Glasgow's famous back to back doubles in 1993 and 1994.
The Glasgow A Plant Tigers' victory ensures the title remains in Scotland for another year following Edinburgh Scotwaste Monarchs 2010 Championship win, and continues a remarkable period of success for the 2 clubs, who despite some rocky years, have still managed to secure 6 Premier League titles between them in just 18 seasons.
Special mention must also go to Glasgow's James Grieves, who must now boast one of the most impressive trophy cabinets in British Speedway and is certainly one of the greatest ever riders to pull on a Scottish race jacket. 2 League titles with Glasgow as a youngster, a top flight Championship medal with Wolverhampton and now this third Championship win with his home club, plus numerous KO Cup winners medals and individual and pairs wins means Grieves has secured his place in history as one of the all time greats of Scottish and British Speedway.
For those of us lucky enough to have witnessed Grieves taking to a Glasgow track for the first time, it's very satisfying to see such dedication to the sport be rewarded, and though he may be nearing the veteran stage of his career and has claimed to take fewer risks, there seems to be few signs of this as he remains the same, fiercely competitive and brave rider that has helped both Glasgow and Edinburgh clubs secure numerous trophies and titles.
James Grieves joins Glasgow's greatest ever rider, Steve Lawson, plus fellow Scot Jim McMillan as all 3 are inducted into the Glasgow Tigers Hall of Fame and there can be few more deserving riders.
Congratulations to all connected with Glasgow Speedway.
